Malformations of the uterus ( uterine anomalies) can be divided into the following categories according to the AWMF guidelines:

The unicornuate uterus is due to an abnormal development in a Müllerian duct . There may be a rudimentary horn. In the case of an implantation in this horn, the probability of a disturbed pregnancy or a tubal pregnancy is very high. This anomaly can be diagnosed very precisely with the three-dimensional ultrasound .

The uterus didelphys is characterized by the lack of fusion of the two Müller ducts. This results in the duplicity of the corpus and cervix uteri. In affected women, pregnancies are associated with an increased risk of positional abnormalities and premature births .

In the bicornuate uterus , only a partial fusion of the Müller ducts takes place, resulting in a common cervix with uterine horns that are differently separated. High rates of premature abortions, premature births and breeches are the risks .

The uterus septus is an externally normal uterus with an externally broadly extended smooth fundus with a sagittal median septum. A median raphe is occasionally found on the fundus. The septal uterus is formed by a complete fusion of the Müller ducts with incomplete resorption of the middle septum, which leads to a varying length and shape of the septum. The septal uterus is the most common uterine malformation. Depending on the length of the septum, a distinction is made between three forms: Uterus subseptus (septum extends into the cavum), uterus septus (septum extends to the cervix) and uterus septus completus (septum extends into the cervix). The demarcation from the uterus arcuatus is not clearly defined.

The uterus arcuatus can be regarded as the lowest expression of the uterus septus.
