Utpalendu Chakraborty

Utpalendu Chakraborty ( Bengali : উৎপলেন্দু চক্রবর্তী , Utpalendu Cakrabartī ; * 1948 in the Pabna district ) is a Bengali Indian film director, musician and novelist.

Life

Chakraborty comes from the Pabna district, which is now part of Bangladesh . In his youth, his uncle Swarnakamal Bhattacharya , a communist writer and screenwriter of the IPTA films Chinnamul (1950, directed by Nemai Ghosh ) and Tathapi (1950, directed by Manoj Bhattacharya ), influenced his development. During his studies at the University of Calcutta he was active in agitation in the student wing of the CPI (ML) . In 1967 he graduated with a Masters in Modern History . He published under the pseudonym Swaranamitra the short story collection Prasab and worked as a teacher under the tribal population in West Bengal , Bihar and Orissa to him health problems in 1971 after Kolkata could return.

His first film work was the 16mm documentary Mukti Chai (1977), with which he campaigned for the release of political prisoners during the emergency. From a Marxist-Leninist point of view, he argued that the laws of the British colonial regime were copied by the Indian state and that this culminated in the Maintenance of Internal Security Act.

Chakraborty's feature films Chokh (1980) and the NFDC- produced Debshishu (1982) - about the religious-financial exploitation of a child's freak - received awards. He made documentaries about the singer Debabrata Biswas and the film director Satyajit Ray . In the 1980s he worked frequently for Indian television .
