Utricularia menziesii is a plant from the genus of the water hoses ( utricularia ) within the family of lentibulariaceae (Lentibulariaceae). This carnivorous plant species (carnivore) lives terrestrially . This endemic occurs only in the Australian state of Western Australia .

features

Utricularia menziesii is a perennial, terrestrial plant with a compact, rosette-shaped habit. It forms numerous, unbranched rhizoids with a thickness of about 0.1-0.2 mm. Stolons are not formed, but the plant arises from small, egg-shaped tubers from 5.0 to 15 mm in length. The foliage leaves appear numerous and grow densely packed near the base. Their stems are quite long, the one-nerved lamina is egg-shaped and fleshy, the total length of the foliage is up to 2–4 cm.

The traps appear in large numbers and, like the leaves, arise from the central vegetation point. They are long-stalked, obliquely ovoid and their size varies between 0.6 and 1.6 mm. The opening is frontal and each left and right of the flap is a ciliate wing. There are also two lashed wing strips on the belly.

The flower stalk grows tightly upright, is simple and unbranched. It becomes 3–7 cm long, the stem is round in cross section, 1.0 mm thick and smooth. The bracts are fused at their base, oval and about 3.0-4.0 mm long. The flowers appear individually. The sepals are slightly narrow-oval and both about 4.0 mm long. The upper sepal is broadly egg-shaped and has a slightly incised tip, the lower sepal is circular and with entire margins. The corolla is 1.5–2.5 cm long and bright red in color and has a yellow mark near the base of the lower lip. The upper lip of the flower is strongly constricted above its center, at its base it is broadly ovoid, above the constriction it is narrowly ovoid with an incised tip. The lower lip is inverted elliptical, at its base it has prominent, parallel furrows. The flower spur is cone-shaped, bluntly tapered, slightly or strongly curved forward and twice to four times as long as the lower lip.

The flowering period extends from June to September.

The capsule fruit is spherical to broadly ovoid, its diameter is approx. 2.5–3.0 mm; the capsule walls are thickly structured. The seeds are broadly ovate and about 0.3-0.35 mm in size.

Occurrence

Utricularia menziesii thrives only in Western Australia in the wetlands from Cockleshell Gully (approx. 200 km north of Perth ) to Orleans Bay . There it grows in sandy soils or in moss cushions between wet rocks.

Systematics

Utricularia menziesii is assigned to the Pleiochasia section .
