The Greenland cod ( Gadus ogac ), also known as Greenland cod , fjord cod and in Greenland Uugaq or Uuaq , is a marine fish that occurs in the Arctic Ocean from the north coast of Alaska along the north coast of Canada to the south west coast of Greenland. In the north-west Atlantic, the southern limit of the distribution area is at Cape Breton Island . An isolated population lives in the White Sea in the north of the European part of Russia.

The Greenland cod is usually 60 cm long, with a maximum length of 77 cm. The population in the White Sea remains smaller. The fish are dark in color with a lighter belly side. Some indistinct spots can be found on the sides of the body and on the back. The peritoneum is dark. The head is relatively wide, the distance between the eyes is 18 to 25% of the length of the head.

The Greenland cod does not form schools and lives mostly near the coast from the sea surface to depths of 200 meters. The species is rarely found on the high seas or in deeper water. It tolerates brackish water, but so far it has not been observed that it also swims in fresh water. Greenland cod becomes sexually mature at three to four years of age. The fish spawn in shallow water from February to May. After spawning, the eggs sink to the bottom. The Greenland cod eats smelt , small flatfish , polar cod , prawns, crabs, krill , cephalopods , bristle worms and echinoderms . The maximum age of the fish is 9 to 11 years.

In terms of fisheries, the species is only of local importance. The catches reached a maximum value of over 5000 t around 1985 and have fallen sharply since then.
