Uwe Groothuis (born May 16, 1954 ) is a former German soccer player and current coach.
Career
As a player
Groothuis started playing football at the age of nine at Kickers Emden . It was not until he was 25 that he was discovered and signed by the second division OSC Bremerhaven during a trial session . In the 1977/78 season he played nine games in the 2nd Bundesliga and made his debut on July 28, 1977 (1st matchday) against Hannover 96 . The Bremerhaven-based, however, rose again after just one season in the league . After four more years in Bremerhaven, in which Groothuis could not prevail, and two years at TSR Olympia Wilhelmshaven , he finally returned to Emden. In his second season he became team captain there and thus had a large share in the promotion to the Oberliga Nord in 1991. In that year he was also voted Lower Saxony's footballer of the year .
As a trainer
After the end of his career, Groothuis was initially assistant coach at the Kickers from Emden under Jürgen Bogs and Alfons Weusthoff. In the 2001/02 season he took over the coaching position for eight months on an interim basis, before he became assistant coach again under the new coach Michael Krüger .
From 2005 to the end of the 2009/10 season, Groothuis coached the U-19 juniors from Kickers Emden, with whom he won the championship in the A-youth Lower Saxony league in 2009 and the associated promotion to the second-class A-youth regional league succeeded. For the 2010/11 season he took over again after the resignation of Johann Lünemann, the first team of the Kickers to secure relegation in the Oberliga Niedersachsen . He was also youth coordinator at Emder. After the opening of insolvency proceedings at Kickers Emden in February 2012 and the associated forced relegation to the regional league for the 2012/13 season, the Kickers board pursued an austerity course, which Groothuis also fell victim to. He was replaced by the previous A-youth coach Yasin Turan.
For the 2012/13 season, Groothuis was initially coach of the regional division TuS Middels from Aurich - Middels for one year . Already in the first season under Groothuis, he was promoted to the district league.
