The Dr16 series is a four-axle diesel-electric locomotive that was procured by the Finnish State Railways ( VR ) between 1985 and 1992 . 23 of these locomotives were built with the Bo'Bo 'wheel arrangement. They are currently (2017) the most powerful diesel locomotives of the VR.

history

In the early 1980s, the Finnish State Railways needed new locomotives to replace the aging Dr12 and Dv12 series diesel locomotives . For test purposes , the company built a larger engine into a Dr12 and designated this locomotive as the Dr15 series . In addition, a Dv12 was modified to run with diesel-electric propulsion instead of diesel engines.

From the tests, VR decided on a completely new locomotive, the Type M from Valmet , with Strömberg providing the electrical components. VR originally ordered 23 locomotives with an option of 20 more after delivery of the first series.

Prototypes

It was originally planned to build two locomotives as prototypes . One should be equipped with a Wärtsilä engine and the second with the Pielstick engine.

After the first Wärtsilä engine was three tons too heavy, the first prototype was equipped with a Pielstick engine on April 22, 1985. After the completion of the Wärtsilä engine was further delayed, the second prototype also received a Pielstick engine. Because of these problems, the number of prototypes was increased to four in January 1986.

The locomotives with the numbers 2801-2804 were put into operation between 1985 and 1987, the latter two then with a Wärtsilä engine. On March 13, 1989, VR decided that all locomotives would be built with Pielstick engines. The two prototypes kept their Wärtsilä engines as the conversion would have been too expensive.

series

The series locomotives were delivered between 1990 and 1992. The manufacturers had expected that larger numbers would be ordered to replace old diesel locomotives. Due to the rapid progress in electrification of the Finnish main lines, however, the demand decreased, so that no further orders were placed.

The locomotives were built by Valmet Oy in Tampere (2801-2809) and Transtech Oy in Otanmäki and Taivalkoski (2810-2809).

technology

The locomotives have a slightly off-center central driver's cab.

Originally, Finnish engines were to be used with the Wärtsilä Vaasa 8R22 , but after the tests with the two prototype locomotives, the engine type was changed to the French Pielstick 12PA4-V-200VG . These engines originally produced 1,660 kilowatts (2,230 hp), but were throttled to 1,500 kilowatts (2,000 hp) in 1997 to increase durability.

The modern at that time locomotives were among the first to use microprocessor-controlled GTO - inverters , AC Induction Motors operated. The data between the modular construction is transmitted by fiber optic cables.

The maximum speed is 140 kilometers per hour. For the train heating, the locomotive delivers 400 kW at 1500 V.

commitment

The Dr16 locomotives are mainly used in heavy traffic in Northern Finland. Their main job is to transport trains on the non-electrified route between Kemi and Kolari in Lapland. They were used on the line between Oulu and Rovaniemi before electrification of the line was completed in 2004.

Whereabouts

Five of the 23 locomotives built were taken out of service. These were all prototype locomotives, of which the 2801 and 2803 were retired on January 20, 2004, the 2804 on November 30, 2004 and the 2802 in July 2009.

In addition, the series locomotive 2814 was decommissioned on February 9, 2000 and then scrapped after it had suffered severe damage at a level crossing near the municipality of Ii . After this accident, the rail clearer of the Dr16 was redesigned and reinforced in accordance with the recommendation of the accident investigation center.

In 2014, locomotives 2807 and 2808 were decommissioned.

In 2019 the Dr16 2807 and 2820 were scrapped.
