Today's VR Bank Augsburg-Ostallgäu eG was created through numerous mergers, most recently the merger of VR Bank Kaufbeuren-Ostallgäu eG with Augusta-Bank eG Raiffeisen-Volksbank in 2019.

The history of the former VR Bank Kaufbeuren-Ostallgäu goes back to 1867, when the agricultural Creditverein Auerberg, a forerunner of Volksbank Marktoberdorf, was founded. The formal establishment took place in 1895 as Raiffeisenbank Buchloe-Kaufbeuren eG. In 2007, the merger of Raiffeisenbank Buchloe-Kaufbeuren-Marktoberdorf and Volksbank Ostallgäu resulted in VR Bank Kaufbeuren-Ostallgäu. In July 2013, the merger with Raiffeisenbank Füssen-Pfronten-Nesselwang eG took place.

The former Augusta-Bank eG Raiffeisen-Volksbank was created in 1999 from the predecessor institutions Augusta-Bank eG and Raiffeisen-Volksbank Augsburg eG. In 2002 there was a merger with the smaller Raiffeisenbank Mühlhausen-Affing eG.

In May 2019, the representatives of VR Bank Kaufbeuren-Ostallgäu and Augusta-Bank eG voted for a merger to form VR Bank Augsburg-Ostallgäu eG in Augsburg.
