The Val Susauna ( [ˌvalsuˈzeːmɐ] ? / I ) is a side valley of the Upper Engadine in the canton of Graubünden . Audio file / audio sample

It extends over a length of 10 km from northwest to southeast, starting at the Scalettapass at 2,606 m. ü. M. and ending at the S-chanfer fraction Chapella at 1'634 m. ü. It is traversed by the Vallember , which flows into the Inn at the head of the valley .

The only place in the valley is the temporary settlement of Susauna . The field names are throughout Romansh and follow the Puter dialect .

Säumerei and hiking trail

In addition to the Flüelepass, the Scalettapass was of great economic importance for freight traffic in the region and thus also for the Val Susauna until the 19th century. A former mule track leads through the valley from Tirano ( Veltlin , Italy ) to Gargellen ( Vorarlberg , Austria ) and the Lake Constance area . Accommodation for travelers is said to have been a very profitable source of income for the Susauners. At the end of the 19th century, due to the improvement of other road connections and the creation of railway connections, the avalanche prone and arduous pass over the Scaletta was used less and less. This also leads to a relevant emigration of the population.

The Jakobsweg Graubünden still uses the route for a partial stage and the Via Valtellina leads along the former Mäumerweg. The Val Susauna was already an escape route from the Engadin towards Davos during the plague times of the Middle Ages . Today the valley , which is made accessible by a natural road, is well suited for slow traffic .

Scalettabahn

A railway, the Scalettabahn, was planned through the valley at the end of the 19th century, which should have connected Davos with the Engadine. The Dutch businessman Willem Jan Holsboer had already initiated the Landquart-Davos railway line. In 1890 the Scalettabahn (narrow-gauge railway) was to be opened and should continue through the Bergell to Chiavenna . The Scalettapass should be driven under in a tunnel about 2000 m above sea level. A stretch version saw the crossing of Sertigtal , the other is a matter within Dischmatal before and both versions would have been out on the right side of the valley of Val Susauna along. Preparatory work began in 1889, on April 2, 1890, Holsboer submitted a license application for a narrow-gauge line Cinuos-chel-Martinsbruck, which, as a continuation of the Scalettabahn line, was supposed to guarantee the connection to the Austrian network. Due to various resistances, the plans were not implemented and the Engadin was opened up by the Albula Railway. The route via the Scaletta and the Val Susauna was for freight ( mule trains ) a few years earlier because of the construction of Flüelapass Street fell sharply.

Animal farm

On December 30, 1928, the “Bernina” silver fox farm acquired the property Su 221 in the Val Susauna, including the changeover to the establishment of a silver fox farm. In the summer of 1929, renovation work began and in December 1929 the facility for the breeding animals was ready for occupancy. There were 31 fox enclosures and one free run. In addition to silver foxes, Karakul sheep (fat- tailed sheep from the Bukhara) were also bred. In 1930, the flock of sheep consisted of 24 ewes with lambs and one Karakul buck.

Due to a massive drop in the price of silver fox pelts, numerous silver fox farms in Switzerland had to close and were liquidated . So did the silver fox farm in Susauna, the stock corporation went bankrupt in 1934.
