Vale de Madeiros is a village in Portugal . It is located between the Rio Dão and Rio Mondego , in the Dão wine-growing region and the Queijo Serra da Estrela cheese region, which is also protected from origin .
Armando Rodrigues de Sá (1926–1979) came from here. He was honored as the millionth guest worker in Germany in 1964, which has been widely reported on since then.
history
Vale de Madeiros was first mentioned in 1196, in the town charter of Canas de Senhorim. In the royal surveys of 1527 the place was still listed as Vall Madeyrus, with only 18 inhabitants. A monastery existing here ( São João do Vale de Madeiros, in today's spelling) was closed in 1560. The Capela de São João Baptista has been preserved to this day.
Sights and culture
The tourist office of the district administration of Nelas lists the village of Vale de Madeiros as one of the destinations in their flyer with the visitor routes through the district.
The monuments of the village include the old stone cross of the village, and two small churches, including the Capela de São João Baptista, which has been preserved from the monastery closed in 1560. There are also some smaller mansions on site. In one of them, the Quinta da Lagoa, a cheese specialty from Queijo Serra da Estrela is made today .
The two stone fountains, Fonte da Bica and Fonte da Castanheira, should also be mentioned. There is also a miradouro with a view of the Serra da Estrela in the village.
In the Parque dos eucaliptos , a small fairground under the eucalyptus trees in the village, the various festivals of Vale de Madeiros take place. Most famous in the region is the folk dance festival ( Festival de folclore ) in August.
