Valentí Serra i Fornell (* 1959 in Manresa , Bages ) is a Catalan Capuchin and priest . His religious name is Valentí Serra de Manresa .

biography

He grew up in a traditional Catalan family of farmers and farmers. In 1980 he became a Capuchin and took his vows on October 30, 1982 . After his theological training, he was ordained a priest on May 31, 1987 in the Capuchin monastery of Arenys de Mar. Then he went to the Capuchin monastery in Sarrià , where he now lives. In 1995 he received his PhD in History from the University of Barcelona .

He is scientific partner of the Faculty of Theology of Catalonia (2007) and member of the faculty of the University of Barcelona (1997). He has been in charge of the Capuchin Archives since 1987 and he is the director of the Spanish Capuchin Library. He is correspondent in Barcelona for the Revue d'Histoire Ecclésiastique (Journal of Church History) ( Université catholique de Louvain ) and a member of the editorial board of the journal Analecta Sacra Tarraconensia (Balmesiana). He is also the editor of Índice Histórico Español (Spanish Historical Directory), a journal on bibliographical criticism founded in 1953 by Jaume Vicens Vives and published by the Centro de Estudios Históricos Internacionales (Center for International Historical Research). He works regularly with the weekly magazine Catalunya Cristiana (Christian Catalonia). He runs the weekly program “Remeis de Frare” (Remedies from the friar) in Ràdio Estel , which deals with traditional medicinal herbs in Catalonia. Since 2015 he has participated in the drawing up of the calendar of Brother Ramon, the hermit of the Pyrenees , which is very popular in Catalonia. He also writes the section L'hortet del frare (the monk's little garden) on the agricultural supplement of the Diari de Girona and the section Cuina de convent (monastery kitchen ) on the newspaper El Jardí de Sant Gervasi i Sarrià .

Research activity

As a critical historian he has u. a. worked on the following topics: the institutional history of the Capuchins of Catalonia from the beginning of the House of Bourbon in Spain (1700) to the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War (1936), the Poor Clares of the Capuchins from their foundation in Catalonia (1599) to the end of the Spanish Civil War (1939), the development of the Franciscan lay people associated with the Capuchins from 1883 to 1957 and the history of the overseas missionaries of the Catalan Capuchins (1680-1989). This research appeared in nine volumes of the Col·lectània Sant Pacià ( Pacian of Barcelona series) of the Faculty of Theology of Catalonia. He is currently studying the role of the Catalan Capuchins in the Catalan folk religious tradition: depictions of the birth of Christ and popular prayers; the food of the monasteries and the medicinal plants; the horticultural art of the friars.
