Valentin Friderich

Valentin Friderich (* before 1600, † 1640 ) was a from Dettelbach originating in Lower Franconia, in Switzerland acting military architect .

life and work

Valentin Friderich was first mentioned in writing on September 24, 1600 when he was admitted to the citizenship of Basel , where he was accepted into the spinning weather guild in the same year and from then on worked as a carpenter. Between 1613 and 1618 he received orders from the Bern government for fortifications in the Bernese Aargau ( Lenzburg , Königsfelden and Schenkenberg ), but these were only partially carried out. Around 1618 he entered the service of Count Mansfeld, but after a few years he returned to Bern and in 1623 he went to Payerne in Vaud for repairsposted. In 1624 he supervised maintenance work on fortresses in Aargau (including in the Schlössli Aarau ). He also designed other fortress structures for Aarburg , Wangen an der Aare and the Col de la Givrine pass near Saint-Cergue .

In 1635 he joined the Grand Council of Bern. In 1619 he published the textbook War Art on Foot and how to make all kinds of Eydgnössischer battle orders with strange agility and rapid advantage .
