Valentin Schwöbel (born February 22, 1863 in Weinheim ; † May 12, 1921 ) was a German Protestant theologian with a focus on Palestine geography.

Life

Valentin Schwöbel was born in 1863 as the son of the farmer Georg M. Schwöbel on the Nahe Bacherhof near Weinheim. Here he attended the community school and switched to the Heidelberg high school. After graduating from high school (1822) he studied Protestant theology in Heidelberg, Zurich, Berlin and Göttingen. In 1889 Schwöbel took up a pastor's post in Sulzbach (now a district of Billigheim). In the same year he married Marie Hamel († 1894). From 1893 he worked as a pastor in the Mannheim state prison.

Inspired by his first trip to the Orient in 1898, Schwöbel continued his education in the areas of geography, geology, paleontology and the Arabic language. He specialized in the field of Palestine geography. In Heidelberg he received his doctorate in 1903 on the subject of "The Galilee Roads and Settlements" (Dr. phil.). In 1905 he took part in the research excursions of the German Palestine Institute (Jerusalem) under Gustaf Dalman on a scholarship . With his death (1921) he left some of his travel photographs to the Greifswald-based Gustaf-Dalman-Institut . Some of his recordings can be found e.g. B. in the standard work “Palestine. The landscape in maps and pictures ”(1930) by the Palestinian geographer Robert Koeppel.
