The refrigerated container ships of the Valparaíso Express class operated by the Hapag-Lloyd shipping company are tailored to the size of the enlarged Panama Canal.

history

A total of five ships of this type were ordered from Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries by the Hamburg shipping company Hapag-Lloyd in 2015 and built in South Korea from March 2016 . The freighters that are used in the shipping company's South America service serve the ports of Rotterdam, London, Hamburg, Antwerp, Le Havre, Caucedo, Cartagena, Manzanillo (Panama), Buenaventura, Callao, Puerto Angamos and Valparaíso.

The Neopanamax - double hull vessels are constructed in its basic design comparable to ULCS -Containerschiffe, their size, however, is slightly on the lower end or below this segment. The deckhouse is arranged relatively far forward, which enables an improved line of sight and thus a higher forward deck loading. Among other things, the bunker tanks are arranged below the superstructure in order to comply with current MARPOL regulations. The propulsion system is provided with a two-stroke diesel main engine of the type MAN B&W 7S90ME-C10.5, which is arranged far aft, which delivers 34,224 kW and allows a top speed of 21 knots. In the bow there are transverse thrusters, each with an output of 2500 kW. The eight cargo holds of the ships are closed with pontoon hatch covers, the transverse division of which into four covers should allow greater flexibility. The ships have a maximum container capacity of 10,500  TEU , with an average container weight of fourteen tons, the capacity drops to around 8,800 TEU. Furthermore, in view of the high proportion of South American refrigerated cargoes, around 2100 connections for integral refrigerated containers are available.
