The Kornmarkt , in Upper Sorbian Žitne wiki , is the largest inner-city square in Bautzen . It is located on the eastern edge of the old town and can be described as the central square of the Spree city due to its location, the numerous streets opening onto it and the adjacent buildings.

Streets

The following streets start from the Kornmarkt: Wendische Graben to the north, Steinstraße, Rosenstraße and Tuchmacherstraße to the east, Karl-Marx-Straße to the south and Lauengraben, Schulstraße, Kesselstraße and Reichenstraße to the west. State road 111 runs across the square itself - coming from the Friedensbrücke over the Lauengraben.

Almost all inner-city bus routes run across the square. These serve the Kornmarkt stop at Kornmarkt-Haus to the north and the Reichenturm stop in front of the Hotel Best Western to the south .

Development

In a clockwise direction there are the following noteworthy buildings around the Kornmarkt: In the north the Citizens' School (also "Buttermarktschule", seat of the children's and youth library) and the Best Western Hotel (formerly "Lubin"), in the east the "Kornmarkthaus", built in 2014 a supermarket and other shops, in the southwest the Kornmarkt-Center , in the west the Museum Bautzen and in the northwest corner the Reichenturm .

Architectural monuments

In addition to the Reichenturm and the museum building (Kornmarkt 1), a few other buildings around the square are protected as cultural monuments, such as the Kirchplatz 5 (with restaurant) and Kornmarkt 9 (right next to it) on the east side, and on the south side at the transition to the Lauengraben Houses Kornmarkt 2 and 4 as well as house Kornmarkt 3 (“Weintraube”) on the west side. The latter dates from 1762 and is the oldest building on the square after the Reichenturm.

On the square, east of the state road, there has also been the Kursächsische Postmeile Pillar since 1957 , which was originally set up in the Schmole district . In 2014, a memorial to the Mayor of Bautzen, Johannes Kaeubler, was erected in the southeast corner at the entrance to Tuchmacherstrasse .

history

The area around today's Kornmarkt on the Schreiberplan from 1709

The inner city wall originally ran across today's Kornmarkt from the Reichenturm to the school bastion. Restored foundation walls on the square are reminiscent of the barbican of the former imperial gate. In 1844 the city moved the ever increasing grain trade from the direct city center to today's Kornmarkt, which is how it got its name.

From 1945 to 1990 the market was called the Red Army Square and was also used for parades and central rallies.

In the course of the planned redesign of the city center, a 13-story experimental building (“House of Fashion”) was built on the east side of the Kornmarkt in 1972, for which the intact building fabric was demolished in part. The old city theater in the southwest corner of the square had already been torn down in 1969. Due to the necessary diversion of through traffic, the still preserved Reichentor in the northwest corner was removed in the same year. The high-rise, which was already visible from afar, was demolished in 1999/2000. The Kornmarkt Center was built during the same period. Since 2014, the location of the former high-rise has been home to the much lower, but still striking “Kornmarkthaus”.

Due to its size and central location, the market is regularly used for city festivals as well as for rallies and demonstrations of all kinds. It is also used as a public meeting point in the evening and at night. In September 2016, it hit the national headlines as the scene of clashes between young asylum seekers and Germans from the right-wing extremist scene, some of them willing to use violence.
