The Van Zyl's Pass , also Van Zyls Pass , is a mountain pass in the Otjihipa Mountains in the Kaokoveld of the Kunene region in northwestern Namibia . It is considered to be the most demanding pass for vehicle traffic in Namibia. The D3703 runs from Okangwati in the east over the pass to the west.
The pass was named after Commissioner for Bantu Affairs Ben van Zyl , the father of Japie van Zyl . Ben van Zyl was also responsible for road construction in Homeland Kaokoveld. The pass was built by hand by 20 men within four months in the early 1960s.
