Vanadium (III) iodide is a chemical compound of the elements vanadium and iodine . It is a brown-black, hygroscopic solid that sublimes at 80–100 ° C.

Extraction and presentation

Vanadium (III) iodide can be obtained from the elements:

Vanadium reacts with iodine in a molar ratio of 2: 3 to vanadium (III) iodide.

properties

Vanadium (III) iodide crystallizes in the trigonal crystal system in the space group R 3 (space group no. 148) with the lattice parameters a  = 692.5  pm and c  = 1991 pm and 6 formula units per unit cell . It thus corresponds to a bismuth (III) iodide structure. Template: room group / 148

Vanadium (III) iodide is sensitive to oxidation and very hygroscopic. It dissolves very easily in water with the formation of [V (H 2 O) 6 ] 3+ ions. The solution is brown in color, which turns green when acid is added.

use

Vanadium (III) iodide is an intermediate in the purification of vanadium by the Van Arkel de Boer process . The vanadium (III) iodide is formed from the elements at relatively low temperatures, sublimed and decomposed again into the elements on a hot wire.
