(III) bromide Vanadium is an unstable chemical compound of the vanadium from the group of bromides .

Extraction and presentation

Vanadium (III) bromide can be obtained by reacting vanadium (IV) chloride with hydrogen bromide , the unstable vanadium (IV) bromide being formed as an intermediate product .

It is also possible to display it by reacting bromine with vanadium or ferrovanadine .

properties

Vanadium (III) bromide is in the form of black, leafy, very hygroscopic crystals with an occasional greenish sheen. Is soluble in water with green color. Its crystal structure is isotypic to that of vanadium (III) chloride with the space group R 3 c (space group no. 167) , a = 6.400 Å , c = 18.53 Å. When heated to temperatures around 500 ° C, a violet gas phase is formed, from which, under suitable conditions, red vanadium (IV) bromide , which already decomposes at −23 ° C , can be deposited by rapid cooling . Template: room group / 167

Vanadium (III) bromide decomposes on contact with air, light or moisture to vanadium , vanadium oxides and hydrogen bromide . Like vanadium (III) chloride, vanadium (III) bromide with dimethoxyethane and THF gives red-brown, soluble complex compounds.
