Vandellis saxifrage ( Saxifraga vandellii ) is a species in the genus saxifrage ( Saxifraga ) in the family Saxifragaceae (Saxifragaceae). The species takes its name from its discoverer, the Italian naturalist Domenico Vandelli (1735-1816), who found it in Canzo near Lake Como. The plant was named by Kaspar Maria von Sternberg (1761-1838), an important Bohemian botanist, theologian, politician and mineralogist. He is considered to be the founder of paleobotany, but has also written a fundamental work on the saxifrage species.

description

Vandellis quarry ( Saxifraga vandellii )

Vandelli's saxifrage is a perennial plant that reaches heights of up to 10 centimeters. It grows in dense and firm pads. Its shoots, which are columnar and leafy like roof tiles, continue to grow for years after flowering.

The basal leaves are green, straight and lanceolate, 6 to 10 millimeters long and 1 to 2 millimeters wide. They are triangular, narrowed into a spiked tip , ciliate towards the bottom and have 5 to 7 calcareous pits on the top. The flower stalk is erect, hairy glands and loosely leafed. There are 3 to 7 flowers in each of the umbel-like inflorescences. The petals are 7 to 10 millimeters long, up to 4 millimeters wide, obovate and have reddish nerves. They are three times as long as the sepals .

Flowering time is from May to July.

The species has chromosome number 2n = 26.

Occurrence

Vandelli's saxifrage occurs from Lake Como to the Judikarian Alps and the Ortler Group, montane to subalpine, in the cracks of sunny limestone cliffs at altitudes of 1000 to 2600 meters. The species is rare.
