Vane Hungerford Pennell (born August 16, 1876 in London , † June 17, 1938 in Bournemouth ) was a British racket player .
successes
At the Olympic Games in London in 1908 , Vane Pennell took part in the racket competitions in singles and doubles. Together with John Jacob Astor he was Olympic champion . There were only two games in the competition: in the semifinals Pennell and Astor prevailed against Evan Baillie Noel and Henry Leaf , so that in the finals Pennell and Astor on Edmund Bury and Cecil Browningmet. Pennell and Astor won the game 6:15, 15: 7, 16:15, 15: 6 and 15: 7. In the individual he was eliminated in the quarterfinals against the later Olympic champion Evan Baillie Noel and finished the competition in fifth place. Pennell also competed in the Jeu de Paume , but did not get past the quarter-finals there either. He was again defeated by the later Olympic champion, in this case George Jay Gould II . He was twice British champion in doubles.
Pennell served in the British Army's Royal Army Service Corps during World War I and was a captain .
