Varus courier

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Varus courier. Information for friends and supporters of the Varus Society is a popular scientific journal in the field of provincial Roman archeology .

The Varus-Kurier is published by the Varus Society for the Promotion of Prehistoric and Early Historical Excavations in Osnabrücker Land eV based in Georgsmarienhütte . In his richly illustrated articles he describes the progress made in the excavations of the probable site of the Varus Battle in the Kalkriese region . The Varus-Kurier is aimed at friends and supporters of the Kalkriese excavations as well as interested laypeople. In addition to the focus on the Varus Battle, other topics of Roman history in Germania are also dealt with. It is freely available as a print for a nominal fee and as a PDF.

The magazine was first published in 1994. It appears up to twice a year. The 19th edition was published in December 2017. For many findings, the Varus-Kurier is initially the first and sometimes for a long time the only way with which new discoveries and findings are made known to a wider public. For example, in 2004 the Varus-Kurier reported on Spitz trenches and explained their find, which in 2006 led to renewed debates about Kalkriese as the site of the Varus battle.

The circulation of the magazine is 3000 copies. The authors are usually the people directly involved in researching the project, such as the project manager Wolfgang Schlüter , excavation manager Susanne Wilbers-Rost , the chief numismatist Frank Berger or the ancient historian Rainer Wiegels .
