Vasil Mohorita

Vasil Mohorita (born September 19, 1952 in Prague ) is a Czech politician .

Life

Mohorita studied at the Komsomol University from 1971 to 1972 . He then worked as a functionary in the communist youth association Socialistický svaz mládeže (SSM) and was its chairman from 1987. He was a member of the Česká národní rada (ČNR) , until 1987 he was a member of its presidium.

In 1988 Mohorita became a member of the Central Committee and Secretariat of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia (KSČ) . He was by far the youngest member of the Communist leadership of the ČSSR. He took part in the organization of the protests of November 17, 1989, which led to the Velvet Revolution in the Czechoslovakia , and publicly criticized the police operation during a performance on Wenceslas Square on November 20.

With 57.7% of the delegate's votes, the former chairman of the communist youth association replaced Karel Urbánek as first secretary of the KSČ on December 21, 1989 , but soon had to give up this post as well. In 1990 he was recalled from the Czech Republic. 1990–1992 he was a member of the Czechoslovak Parliament . He later worked in the Party of Democratic Socialism of the Czech Republic and withdrew from active politics in 1997. He was considered a reform communist.
