Vassilis Alexakis ( Greek Βασίλης Αλεξάκης ; * December 25, 1943 in Athens ; † January 11, 2021 ibid) was a Greco-French writer who wrote his works in French and Greek . In 1995 he received the French literary prize Prix ​​Médicis .

Life

Vassilis Alexakis came to France in 1961 to study journalism in Lille. This course of study did not yet exist in Greece at the time. Shortly after completing his studies, he returned to Greece, where he experienced the 1967 Colonel coup, which began the Greek military dictatorship . He then left the country a year later to settle in Paris, where he worked as a journalist. Most recently he lived alternately in Paris, Athens and on the Greek island of Tinos .

Alexakis dealt in his work with life between two cultures and two languages ​​as well as with writing. For him, fiction and reality can hardly be separated; i.a. because there are many parallels between him and his protagonists.

His first novels, Le sandwich from 1975, Les girls de City-Boum-Boum from 1976 and La tête du chat from 1978, were written in French and translated into Greek by Alexakis' mother. It was not until the fourth novel, Tαλγο (1980), that Alexakis wrote in Greek and translated it himself into French under the title Talgo .

There were a few French works, including the autobiography Paris - Athènes (1989) and the the Prix Albert Camus excellent work Avant 1992 before Alexakis published the next Greek novel: Ε: Η Μητρική γλώσσα ( "E: The mother tongue" 1995), which in turn appeared in Alexakis' own translation under the title La Langue maternelle in France and (together with Le Testament français by Andreï Makine ) received the Prix ​​Médicis .
