She was Chief Minister of Rajasthan from December 13, 2013 to December 16, 2018 . She held this office from 2003 to 2008.

Professional career

Vasundhara Raje is a descendant of the Indian Marathi princely family Scindia . Her father George Jivajirao Scindia was the last ruling Maharaja of the Indian princely state of Gwalior and from 1947 until the States Reorganization Act 1956 was Rajpramukh of Madhya Bharat . Vasundhara was one of the Maharaja's five children. She attended the Presentation Convent in Kodaikanal ( Tamil Nadu ) and then studied economics and politics at Sophia College, University of Bombay, where she received a BA .

Raje began her political career in the state of Rajasthan . There she was vice-chairwoman of the local youth organization of the BJP ( Yuva Morcha BJP ) from 1985-87 . In 1987 she became Vice President of the BJP in Rajasthan. 1985-89 she was elected MP in the Parliament of Rajasthan for constituency 78-Dholpur . From the parliamentary elections in 1989 she was a member of the All-India Parliament ( Lok Sabha ) for the constituency 15-Jhalawar and was re-elected there in the following all- Indian elections in 1991 , 1996 , 1998 and 1999 .

After the BJP was able to provide Prime Minister with Atal Bihari Vajpayee from 1998, Raje held ministerial posts in various Indian governments. From 1998 to 1999 she was Indian Foreign Minister in the second Vajpayee cabinet . In the third cabinet, Vajpayee , she held the post of State Secretary with her own portfolio ( Minister of State with Independent Charge ) in the area of small and agricultural industries from October 13, 1999 to January 29, 2003 , as well as other responsibilities in the areas of pensions, personnel and public complaints , Atomic energy and space travel. From November 2, 2001 to January 29, 2003, she was also given responsibility for the planning commission.

After the BJP won the Rajasthan parliamentary election in 2003, Vasundhara Raje was elected Chief Minister of Rajasthan. At that time she was the first woman to hold this post. Since that election she has been a member of the parliament of Rajasthan for the constituency of 198-Jhalrapatan until today (2015) . She held the office of Chief Minister from December 8, 2003 to December 13, 2008. During her term of office, she put one focus of her government on improving the infrastructure of Rajasthan and various social initiatives (education, women's rights, etc.). During her tenure, however, there was also considerable violent unrest, caused by caste rivalries. The influential Gujjar community rebelled against the government because it refused to grant it the status of a scheduled tribe . In contrast, the Meenas community, recognized as a scheduled tribe , did not want to share this status with the Gujjars. As a result of the dispute and its tough stance, the government lost many potential votes and the 2008 general election in Rajasthan was lost for the BJP, so that Raje was the leader of the opposition in the Rajasthan parliament between 2008 and 2013. After the 2013 election, which was successful for the BJP, she was re-elected Chief Minister on December 13, 2013.

However, the BJP lost the parliamentary election on December 7, 2018, so that Raje had to relinquish the office of Chief Minister to Ashok Gehlot (Congress Party), from whom it had also taken over in 2003 and 2013.

Private

On November 7, 1972, Raje married Hemant Singh , who came from the Rajasthan royal family of Dholpur . However, the marriage broke up after a year. The marriage resulted in a son, Dushyant Singh, who is also politically active in the BJP.
