The volcanic mountain Vatnsdalsfjall is located in the northwest of Iceland .

Surname

The name means Seetalberg in German . This is explained by the lake that lies to the west of the mountain in the Vatnsdalur valley .

geology

Iceland is traversed by an active rift zone , which is due to the effect of the continental drift on the mid-Atlantic ridge . This rift zone was not always in the same place, but shifted at certain intervals above the hot spot under Iceland.

Vatnsdalsfjall is located on the site of a former rift zone that was active around 7 million years ago.

As far as the rocks of the Vatnsdalfsjall are concerned, it contains u. a. Hjallin , a flood basalt unit that was initially defined as an intrusion. These basalts partially take the form of lava pillars . You can also find rhyolite and sandstone in the mountain .

Landslides

The mountain is heavily eroded and known for its large landslides, the most famous traces of which are the group of hills of the Vatnsdalshólar to the west of its foot . At the time of the Ice Age, valley glaciers cut gullies into it and this is probably what triggered the phenomenon. Heavy rains do the rest.

The most devastating landslides occurred in 1545 and 1720. The first of these fell the farm Skiðastaðir í Vatnsdal and with it 14 people fell victim. The farm was never rebuilt. Other large landslides that destroyed farms probably occurred in 1390 (less well documented) and 1811.

Hiking on Vatnsdalsfjall

You can z. B. from the east side along the banks of the small river Giljá and from there up the mountain.
