The Vattenfall Contemporary (until 2009 Energy Art Prize ) is an art prize and is awarded by the energy company Vattenfall Europe .

history

The "Vattenfall Contemporary" was awarded to the media artist Julian Rosefeldt for the first time in 2010 by Vattenfall Europe in cooperation with the Berlinische Galerie . This award follows the tradition of the Energy Art Prize , which was launched in 1992 by the predecessor company VEAG . Until 2009, this art prize was awarded to artists who are eligible for funding and who have their main life and work in East Germany. The eight-member jury , chaired by Jörn Merkert, director of the Berlinische Galerie, consisted of art experts from the new federal states as well as the previous year's art prize winner. From 2005 to 2008 the prize was awarded by Vattenfall Europe Mining & Generation in Cottbus.

In 2009 - exactly 20 years after reunification - the art prize was redesigned and renamed Vattenfall Contemporary . The restriction to funding young artists from the new federal states has been lifted. The "Vattenfall Contemporary" award is now given to nationally and internationally recognized artists who live and work in Berlin. There are explicitly no exclusion criteria such as nationality or age. In addition, in recent years Berlin has established itself as one of the most important centers for contemporary art alongside London and New York, which is why the prize will be awarded in Berlin from 2010. With the reorientation of the prize, the limitation to painting and drawing was lifted and in future it will also be awarded for media art, performance and sculpture.

Each jury member can propose 1 to 2 candidates for the "Vattenfall Contemporary". It is not possible to apply for the award. In addition to a solo exhibition in the Berlinische Galerie, the prize includes the production of a catalog, a ceremonial opening of the exhibition with award ceremony and the purchase of a work by Vattenfall Europe AG.

The jury for Vattenfall Contemporary 2012 is composed as follows: Magnus af Petersen, (Head of Exhibitions and Collections, Moderna Museet, Stockholm), Angela Bulloch (Vattenfall Contemporary 2011 winner), Udo Bekker (Vattenfall Chief Human Resources Officer), Hanna Marie Ebert ( Manager Corporate Art - Vattenfall Collection), Thomas Köhler (Director of the Berlinische Galerie), Heinz Stahlhut (Head of the Visual Art Collection, Berlinische Galerie)
