Veikko Juhani Hjalmari Litzen (born December 1, 1933 in Helsinki ; died January 17, 2011 in Rome ) was a Finnish cultural historian and archivist .

After graduating from high school in 1953, Veikko Litzen began studying at the University of Helsinki and from 1962 to 1963 also trained as an archivist at the Helsinki City Archives. From 1962 to 1972 he worked as an archivist at the Finnish State Archives and in 1973 at the Turku State Archives . In 1974 he received his doctorate in Helsinki with the work A war of roses and lilies: The theme of succession in Sir John Fortescue’s works . From 1973 to 1978 he conducted research in the archives of the State Archives, among other things on film history, until he accepted the call to the newly established Chair of Cultural History at the University of Turku . Until 1987 he taught at the university, interrupted between 1983 and 1985, when he was director of the Institutum Romanum Finlandiae in Rome. There he devoted himself to the cultural change at the time of late antiquity . In 1987 Litzen took over the management of the Finnish National Archives, which he headed until 1996.

Litzen also taught during this time at the Universities of Helsinki, Turku, Tampere , the Sibelius Academy and the Helsinki University of Technology . His research focus was in the area of medieval studies .
