history
The island has been inhabited by humans since the earliest times. The larger Veli Iž is younger than the Mali Iž, which was inhabited by only 215 people (2011) . The residents grew olives and wine and ranched sheep. The parish of Petra i Pavla was first mentioned in 1341 . The shipyard was founded in Veli Iž at the end of the 18th century. At the end of the 19th century, many of the island's residents emigrated to North and South America. With funds from these emigrants, a small theater, the Dom Kulture , was built in 1927 for the residents who stayed behind. Today it is used more and more again. In 1969 the only hotel Korinjak was built to this day. Every year, at the end of July, the Iška fešta takes place with the election of the king. This age-old tradition took place on December 26th, 1879. This summer festival has been held as a tourist attraction since 1970.
Since 1975 there has been a small ethnographic museum in Veli Iž. The collection, which consists of over 750 objects, was built with the help of the Zadar Museum and objects donated by the population and reflects a very good picture of people's life in the period around industrialization . The museum is located in the former summer house of the aristocratic Fanfogna family, from the 18th century, in the middle of the village.
In Veli Iž there is still the only pottery on the island, Iška Keramika . In the past, the island was the only one on the Dalmatian coast that practiced this craft. Up to 30 people were involved in this craft. The ceramic goods, pots for storing sheep's cheese and small warmer warmer for the fishermen, were widely known.
