Velký Kosíř (German Kossirz mountain ; 442 mnm) is a striking elevation in the hilly Bouzovská vrchovina , the southernmost part of the Zábřežská vrchovina , in the Olomouc region , Czech Republic . It is located about 9 kilometers northwest of Prostějov and 15 kilometers from Olomouc ; its top area belongs to the area of the municipality Slatinky , okres Prostějov . The name of the hill is said to come from the elongated shape reminiscent of a scythe (Czech kosa ). Because of its conspicuous location in the Hanna plain , it is jokingly called "the Mont Blanc der Hanna".

Origin and settlement history

The mountain was formed from sediments that were deposited on the ocean floor in the Carboniferous Age around 340 to 340 million years ago. There are valuable paleontological sites in the area. Fossils of oysters , mussels and sea urchins have been found on the mountain in the past. People inhabited the area as early as the Paleolithic . Archaeologists succeeded in finding an Eeolitic female figure - the so-called Venus von Kosíř - unique in Moravia in 1972.

Infrastructure and sights

There is a monument to František Palacký on the top . An educational trail leads over the hill and the neighboring communities. On the western slope there is a memorial stone for four airmen who were killed here in a helicopter accident in 1998.

natural reserve

The wooded hill and the surrounding area were declared the Velký Kosíř Nature Park in 2000 . There are several specially protected areas on Velký Kosíř: Andělova zmola , an oak forest in which mosses and moss lichens grow (37.4 hectares, nature reserve since 1990), the Studený kout ant colony (5.3 hectares, natural monument since 1995), and Brus , a wooded slope with warmth-loving vegetation west of the hill (42 hectares, natural monument since 1983). The sub-peak Malý Kosíř (316 mnm) in the east has been protected as a nature reserve on 11.25 hectares since 1993.
