Vera Dua

Vera Agnes Roger Dua (born October 25, 1952 in Ghent ) is a Belgian politician of the Flemish "green" party Groen! .

Life

Dua studied from 1975 and became an agricultural engineer . Eleven years later, she is doing her PhD in agricultural science . During the 1980s she was a research assistant at Ghent University . Then she became a civil servant at AMINAL, the administration for environmental, natural, land and water.

Dua has been a member of the Agalev party since 1984 . In 1989 she won a seat on the Ghent municipal council. Two years later, Dua was elected to the Kamer . In 1995 she moved to the Vlaams Parlement . There she leads u. a. the opposition to the former Minister of Agriculture Theo Kelchtermans (CD&V). After the election success in 1999, she succeeded Kelchterman as Minister of Agriculture and Environment.

As a minister, she strove to expand the nature reserves . She also wanted to severely limit agricultural overproduction, which got her into a lot of trouble with the farmers. With her signature, the Flemish government introduced the health test for newborns.

After Agalev's second defeat in the federal elections on May 18, 2003, she gave up the ministerial office and went back to the Flemish parliament. Her successor was her party comrade Ludo Sannen .

On November 15, 2003, she became the first chairwoman of the Flemish Greens. In November 2007 she passed this position on to Mieke Vogels .

Vera Dua is currently a member of the Commission for Economy, Labor, Social Affairs and Energy in the Flemish Parliament.
