Vera Malinovskaya

Vera Malinovskaja (alternative spellings Vera Malinovskaja and Vera Malinovskaya , Russian Вера Степановна Малиновская Vera Stepanovna Malinovskaya ; * 1900 in Kiev , Russian Empire , today: Ukraine ; † 1988 in Monaco ) was a Soviet actress in the domestic and German silent film.

Live and act

The native Ukrainian began her artistic career as a ballet dancer before she turned to acting. Vera Malinovskaya was brought in front of the camera in 1924 and became a star of Soviet cinema over the next four years. The 1925 film adaptation of Pushkin's " The Postmaster " ( Коллежский регистратор ), where she embodied dunya at the side of Ivan Moskvin , had the greatest artistic significance . The great success of the Jakow Protasanov film "The Waiter from the Palace Hotel" also in western countries brought Malinovskaya an offer from Germany.

The Kiev woman then played supporting roles in three late German silent films: In Karl Grunes Waterloo , she played the Polish Countess Tarnowska in 1928, and then she was the daughter of the gypsy primate in the film adaptation of the Carl Wilhelm opera of the same name . In 1929, she played the imperial lady-in-waiting, Countess Nostiz, in The Favorite of Schönbrunn , made in the transition from silent to sound films.

Barely able to speak German, the dawn of the sound film age meant the end of Vera Malinowskaja's career abroad. However, she decided to stay in the West and lived in Germany and Italy for the following years. In the Third Reich, she is said to have fled from the National Socialists with the help of Erich Maria Remarque and his wife, with whom she was friends. In 1979 Vera Malinovskaya returned to her Soviet homeland for the first time in many years to take part in the 11th International Film Festival in Moscow. The former actress spent her twilight years in Monaco, where she died in 1988.
