Vera Reiss (born February 1, 1961 in Kandel ) is a German politician ( SPD ). From 2014 to 2016 she was Minister for Education, Science, Continuing Education and Culture in the Rhineland-Palatinate state government.

Education, family and work

After graduating from high school in Wörth am Rhein , she went to Toronto / Canada as an au pair for a year, where she attended the Seneca Language College. After her return, she began studying political science, sociology, economics and education at the Philipps University in Marburg in 1982 , which she graduated with a diploma in 1988. Her son Jens was born during her studies in 1984.

After graduating, Vera Reiß initially worked as a freelancer in the field of women's advancement. Together with other authors, she published a handbook for active women's work at universities . In 1990 she accepted an offer from Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz and became head of the women's office. In 1994 she then moved to the Rhineland-Palatinate Ministry of Education and Science as press spokeswoman. She later headed the office of Minister Jürgen Zöllner and Minister Doris Ahnen , before taking over the department for child and youth policy, day-care centers, all-day schools and fundamental educational matters in 2005.

Public offices

From 2007 to 2011 Vera Reiß was State Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Science, Youth and Culture (MBWJK) and then State Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Science, Further Education and Culture (MBWWK), of which she was also head of office from 2012. On November 12, 2014, Vera Reiss was appointed Minister for Education, Science, Further Education and Culture. She no longer belongs to the Dreyer II cabinet , which was formed after the state elections in Rhineland-Palatinate in 2016 .
