Cross of Merit for Art and Science (Reuss)

The Cross of Merit for Art and Science was awarded on May 23, 1885 by Prince Heinrich XIV. Reuss j. L. and was awarded to nationals and foreigners who had achieved special merits and excellent achievements in the field of art and science . In 1912 the Order was on the L. ä Principality of Reuss. Expanded.

Order classes

The order consisted of two classes and was expanded in two stages in 1909 by the Medal for Art and Science .

  • I. class - gold
  • II class - silver
  • Medal in gold
  • Medal in silver

Order decoration

The medal is a paw cross made of gold-plated silver with grained cross arms. A green enameled laurel wreath , open at the top, runs under the horizontal cross arms , which in turn rests on the vertical cross arms. The inscription Litteris et (right) Artibus (left) can be read on the horizontal arms of the cross . In the medallion is the coat of arms of the two principalities surmounted by a crown . On the back the laurel wreath rests on the horizontal arms of the cross. In the medallion is the initial H (Heinrich) surmounted by a crown .

The round medal is made of gold-plated silver or silver-plated white metal and is surrounded by a thick laurel wreath. It shows the intertwined initials HR (Heinrich Reuss) towered over and entwined by a crown . On the reverse the three-line inscription Litteris et Artibus .

Carrying method

The award was worn on a ribbon on the left side of the chest.
