Honored Master of Sports of the USSR in chess
The Honored Master of Sports of the USSR (until 1983 as Honored Master of Sports ) was a state award in the Soviet Union . The honorary title was introduced on May 27, 1934 by the Central Executive Committee of the USSR . It was awarded by the State Committee for Physical Culture and Sport to masters who were actively involved in building up Soviet physical culture and who had outstanding achievements. The award took the form of a badge with a certificate. In June 1934 the first list of 22 athletes from Moscow , Leningrad , Kiev and Kharkov was published. In total, more than 4000 titles were awarded, 52 of which went to chess players. The title awarded for life could possibly be revoked. This is what happened to Alla Kuschnir and Viktor Korchnoi after they emigrated from the Soviet Union. Mark Taimanow , punished for his crushing defeat to Bobby Fischer , got the title back at the end of the Soviet era.
