This is one of Korolkov's most famous studies.
- Solution :
- 1. d6 – d7 Kf6 – e7 2. Rb7 – b8! Bh4xg3
- After 2.… f1D 3. d8D + Kxd8 4. Ba6 + Kc7 5. Bxf1 Kxb8 6. gxh4! White wins easily. To prevent this, Black eliminates the white pawn, since after 3. Kxg3? f1D 4. Ba6 + Kc7 cannot capture the queen and save the rook at the same time.
- 3. Rb8 – a8! f2-f1D 4. d7-d8D + Ke7xd8 5. Lc8-a6 +
- It looks like White is already there. But Black has prepared a trap.
- 5.… Bg3 – b8 !!
- If now 6. Rxb8 +? Kc7 follows, White has only achieved a draw . But he can win by sacrificing the tower .
- 6. La6xf1 Kd8 – c7 7. Bf1 – a6 e3 – e2! 8. La6xe2 Kc7-b7
- Black seems to have reached its goal, the white rook is conquered. However, the price for this is too high.
- 9. Be2 – f3! Kb7xa8 10. Bf3xc6 mate
