Virgil Nestorescu

Virgil Nestorescu (born February 8, 1929 in Buzău ; † June 21, 2018 ) was a Romanian Slavist and chess composer .

Life

Nestorescu was a linguist for Slavic studies . He did his doctorate on the subject of Lipovan dialects in Romania. Phonetics and Philology . In the last few years of his professional activity, he headed the department for bilingual lexicography at the Bucharest Institute for Linguistics. His work included Romanian-Slavic language contacts, etymology , the history of Romanian vocabulary and research on dialects.

Nestorescu was married. He didn't have any children.

Chess composition

According to his own statements, Nestorescu started composing by chance when there was no success in party chess. He mastered all genres of chess composition. He published over 400 chess problems and more than 200 studies . Especially his studies made him known.

Nestorescu was appointed International Chess Composition Referee in 1958 . Since 2001 he was the grand master of chess composition . From 1972 to 1994 Nestorescu was Romania's delegate to the PCCC meetings. He was a member of the Central Commission for Chess Composition of the Romanian Chess Federation.
