Coupe de France 1993/94

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The competition for the Coupe de France in the 1993/94 season was the 77th playout of the French football cup for men's teams. This year 6,261 clubs registered, including some from overseas French possessions .

Defending champion was Paris Saint-Germain , who was eliminated in the quarter-finals this time. The trophy was won by the Association de la Jeunesse Auxerroise , which was successful for the first time in its second finals after 1979 . Final opponent Montpellier Hérault SC was in their fourth final; In 1990 the southern French won the coupe for the last time.

The fact that eight top division teams were eliminated in the first nationwide round set the negative high of 1980 ; At that time, the lower-class teams had no home rights either. For the latter, it was still difficult in this competition and they were no longer represented in the semifinals. With FC Sète , EA Guingamp and SO Châtellerault , three semi-professional teams from National 1 (third division) made it to the round of 16; the traditional fourth-rate amateur club Racing Paris 92 even advanced one lap. In the last sixteen four teams from the professional division 2 were represented, of which only the US Valenciennes advanced to the quarter-finals, where they were also eliminated.

After the qualification rounds organized by the regional subdivisions of the regional association FFF , the 20 first division teams also intervened in the competition from the round of the last 64 teams. The pairings and home rights were drawn freely for each round; only in the thirty-second finals were those clubs automatically allowed to play their game in front of their own audience that competed against an opponent playing at least two classes higher. If the score was tied after extra time, there was a penalty shoot-out.

Special occurrences

The AJ Auxerre, originally emerging from the Catholic sports movement , coped with the injury-related loss of their goalkeeper Bruno Martini in the final and won the first title in their club history.

This season the "Affaire OM-VA" overshadowed French football, including the cup competition: Olympique Marseille (OM) was convicted of attempted match-fixing against the US Valenciennes-Anzin (VA) in the previous league season 1992/93, its championship title was revoked and the club was transferred to the second division in the summer of 1994.
