Michel Der Zakarian ( Armenian Միշել Տեր-Զաքարյան ; born February 18, 1963 in Yerevan ) is a former Armenian football player and current coach who also has French citizenship . He is currently training the French first division club HSC Montpellier . In his playing days he was a defender .
Career
youth
At the age of six, Der Zakarian began playing football for the Marseille club Vivaux Maronniers Sports. In 1974 he moved to AS Mazargues , a club that is also in Marseille. He stayed there for five years until the professional club FC Nantes signed him.
Professional teams
Signed in 1979, Der Zakarian played 140 times for FC Nantes in nine years and scored one goal. In 1988 he moved to the then league competitor Montpellier HSC . There he ended his active career ten years later. He came to 233 appearances and 15 goals.
Trainer
After his career at Montpellier, Der Zakarian initially took over the 3rd team before coaching the 2nd team from 1999. In 2006 he was briefly coach of the 2nd team in Nantes, after which he was co-coach for one year and head coach since February 2007. After relegation, he moved to Clermont Foot in the summer of 2009 . In 2012 he returned to Nantes as head coach, made promotion to Ligue 1 with the team and consolidated the club in the lower midfield. In April 2016, Der Zakarian announced that they would be leaving the club at the end of the season.
In 2016/17 Michel Der Zakarian Stade Reims trained before taking over the first team at HSC Montpellier at the end of this season .
