Byron Zappas ( Greek Βύρων Ζάππας , Vyron Zappas ; * December 6, 1927 in Athens ; † January 5, 2008 ) was the first Greek grandmaster for chess compositions .

Life

Zappas learned chess from his older brother at the age of 14 . Supported by Spyros Bikos, Ioannis Koutalidis and Basil Lyris, he began to compose mating tasks in three moves and after a short time also in two moves. With the help of the Greek Chess Federation, he founded the Greek Committee for Chess Composition . Zappas ensured that Greece joined the PCCC in the early 1980s . After serving as a Greek delegate to the PCCC for 25 years, he was nominated for honorary membership in 2006.

In 1988 Zappas became International Chess Composition Judge and in 1993 Grand Master Chess Composition . In the FIDE albums 1977-79, 1983-85 and 1986-88 he was the composer with the most points in the two-pass division. Although he composed only about 500 problems, about 100 of them received prizes and more than 200 other awards. By the FIDE album 1998-2000 Zappas received 84 points.

Zappas was also a strong party gamer. When he lived in Cyprus in the 1960s , he won three consecutive championships. In 1964 he took part with the Cypriot national team at the Chess Olympiad in Tel Aviv with a score of 3.5 points from 9 games.

Byron Zappas studied economics at the University of Athens and trained in accounting at the London School of Economics . He moved to Cyprus in the 1960s. He initially worked as a teacher at a Cypriot school. In 1970 Zappas returned to Greece, where in 1972 he was appointed professor of accounting at the Technological Educational Institute , which he held until retirement. He wrote a total of four books on bookkeeping. Zappas died as a result of an ongoing illness.
