Vergilius Mediceus

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Vergilius Mediceus   is named for a manuscript written in Capitalis rustica in the 5th century AD , which, after an entry by Flavius Turcius Rufius Apronianus Asterius on Folio 8r, was corrected and interpreted by him, the Consul Ordinarius of 494, for his brother Macharius. Vergilius Mediceus later found its way into the library of the Bobbio Abbey , whose ownership entry can be found on Folio 2r. From there he came to the monastery of S. Paolo fuori le mura ( Saint Paul Outside the Walls ) near Rome around 1470 . Soon alienated from the monastery, it passed through numerous hands and was finally acquired by Francesco I de 'Medici . From his possession it came soon after 1587 to the Biblioteca Medicea Laurenziana , where the parchment codex is today under the signature Florence, Biblioteca Medicea Laurentiana, Plut. XXXIX, 1 is kept. A single sheet is in Vatican City, BAV, lat. 3225, attached to the Vergilius Vaticanus as fol. 76. The Vergilius Mediceus contains works by the Roman poet P. Vergilius Maro : Fol. 2r-9r: Eclogae (fragmentary). Fol.9r-49v: Georgica . Fol.49v-221v: Aeneid . In the editions it is listed under the Sigle M. He is one of the most important text witnesses.

220 (of originally approx. 229) leaves have been preserved.

The layout having a relatively slender aspect ratio of about 21.5 cm page height and 15 cm width, a high-format text area of 29 verses per page, a small font size of only 0.25 to 0.3 cm gives the handwriting a less monumental Character, but rather that of a demanding reading text for private use, whose reliability was important, as the numerous old corrections show.

There are a number of other famous Virgil manuscripts from late antiquity .
