The tapering is a manufacturing method for the reduction of cross sections of solid or hollow workpieces. It is of comparatively little importance and, together with the much more important processes of extrusion and extrusion, is counted as pressing through , which in turn counts as pressure forming . The tapering is used for the production of piece goods , especially for shafts of gears or for wheel mounting screws .

In the case of tapering, tubes or rods are used as raw parts and, as in all methods of pressing through, are pressed through a hollow tool ( die ) which, in the case of tapering and extrusion, contains the cross-sectional shape to be produced. In the case of tapering, the raw parts are not supported in front of the opening of the die - in contrast to the sister processes - which is why buckling or bulging can occur if the free length is too great. Because of the lack of support, however, tapering can be combined with other methods.
