The Savior Transfiguration Cathedral (Russian Спасо-Преображенский собор) is a Russian Orthodox church in Zelenogradsk in Russia 's Kaliningrad Oblast . It was built in 1896/97 as the Protestant Adalbert Church in the Baltic resort of Cranz in East Prussia.

history

1855 to 1945

Cranz originally belonged to Rudau . In 1855 the first half-timbered church was built. From 1863 there were auxiliary preachers who lived in Cranz. In 1877 a separate parish was formed in Cranz. In 1896 construction began on a larger church, which was consecrated in 1897. The designs came from the builder Laurier. The old half-timbered church was given to Zimmerbude .

In 1917 the three bells for the First World War had to be handed in. They were later replaced with the support of Adolf von Batocki .

After 1945

The building remained undamaged in 1945 and was used for various purposes in the following years. Since 1957 it has been a warehouse for a fishing company, since 1990 a gym.

In 1995 it was handed over to the Russian Orthodox Church and consecrated as the Church of the Annunciation . In 2007, Metropolitan Kyrill made it a cathedral. It belongs to the diocese of Kaliningrad and Baltiysk . In 2007 the building was classified as an object of regional cultural importance by the local authorities.

There is another Russian Orthodox Church of St. Andrew the First Called in the village. After 1990 a Protestant parish was established again in Zelenogradsk, which is a branch of the Resurrection Parish in Kaliningrad.

Architecture and interior design

The building is a neo-Gothic building made of raw red bricks with a straight choir closure. The tower in the west is 42 meters high. An entrance hall is built on to the north.

The church had a semicircular wooden ceiling. The historical interior consisted of an altarpiece, a pulpit and an organ by Max Terletzki , none of which have survived .

Today there is an iconostasis in the church, as well as other objects.

Parish locations until 1945

In 1877 a parish was formed in Cranz. It belonged to the parish of Königsberg-Land II in the church province of East Prussia of the Church of the Old Prussian Union . In 1885 Sarkau was incorporated. No church records have been preserved.
