geography
The headwaters of the Potts River is located at the northern end of the Potts Range , a good one kilometer west of the 2401 m high Pito Peak , which is already part of the Big Hill Range . From its headwaters, the river initially runs in a southerly direction, and then after just 4 km swings in a south-easterly direction. After a further 4 km the valley of the river narrows and forces the river through narrow gorges up to 8 km before it flows into the Rangitata River . To the west, the Potts River is accompanied by the mountain ranges of the Potts Range and to the east by the Big Hill Range and further south by the Dogs Range and in the estuary, in addition, the river moves west-southwest, by the Harper Range .
Te Araroa Trail
Coming from the southeast, from the plateau of Lake Clearwater , the Te Araroa Trail joins the river 4 km east of the Potts River estuary and accompanies it on its southern side to the estuary. The trail then continues on the opposite side of the Rangitata River in the Bush Stream valley .
