The Vermilion River is an approximately 65 km long orographic left tributary of the Kootenay River in Kootenay National Park in the Canadian province of British Columbia .
The Vermilion River has its source in the Rocky Mountains on the continental divide at an altitude of 2000 m . The headwaters lie between the two mountains Chimney Peak and Mount Whymper . The course of the river and a large part of the approximately 951 km² catchment area lies within the Kootenay National Park. The Vermilion River first flows east to the 1651 m high Vermilion Pass , where it turns to the southwest. The British Columbia Highway 93 follows the entire course of the river through the national park to the junction with the upper reaches of the Kootenay River below Kootenay Crossing . The rapids of Numa Falls lie along the course of the river . Notable tributaries are Tokumm Creek and Ocher Creek from the right and Simpson River from the left.
