Vernon L. Larson

Vernon L. Larson (born October 25, 1948 in Vivian , South Dakota ) is an American politician ( Republican Party ).

Career

Vernon L. Larson graduated from Vivian High School. In 1970 he earned a Bachelor of Arts from Northern State University in Aberdeen ( Brown County ).

He began his political career as a sales representative for US Senator James Abdnor . From 1979 to 2003 he served as the State Auditor for South Dakota. Larson is the longest-serving constitutional civil servant in South Dakota history. In 1998 he was re-elected unopposed. It was the first time in South Dakota that a constitutional civil servant was elected to office in a general election without an opposing candidate. From 1998 to 1999 he was President of the National Association of State Comptrollers. Larson has served on the Executive Committee of the National Association of State Auditors, Comptrollers and Treasurers and the State Board of Finance. In the 2002 election, he was elected State Treasurer of South Dakota. On January 6, 2003, he took up his new post. Larson was re-elected in the 2006 election. Due to a term of office limited to two consecutive four-year terms, he did not run again and left his office in early 2011. In August 2013, South Dakota Governor Dennis Daugaard appointed him Commissioner of School and Public Lands of South Dakota to fill a vacancy created by the resignation of Jarrod Johnson . His term ended in January 2015. Larson is the first person in South Dakota history to hold three different state offices.

He is a member of the Boys State, the Elks , the Kiwanis , the March of Dimes and the United Way .
