The genus Verrucaria includes numerous, almost entirely rock-dwelling lichens . Most of the species are typical lime lichens . The fruiting bodies are small, rarely more than 0.6 mm wide perithecia , which are usually more or less sunk into the bed or, in the case of endolithic species, into the rock. Hardly any other lichen genus is currently as poorly known as Verrucaria .
particularities
It is worth mentioning the so-called endolithic species, in which the hyphae and the layer of algae are located within the rock. The perithecia are literally dissolved into the stone. After the camp dies, small pits remain in the rock.
