Veternik ( Serbian - Cyrillic Ветерник ) is a Serbian settlement in the Okrug Južna Bačka . It is a suburb of the municipality of Novi Sad and has 17,454 inhabitants (as of 2011).
Surname
Veternik was named in honor of the Serbian soldiers of the First World War who stormed the Macedonian front on Mount Veternik . First the settlement Novi Veternik ("New Veternik") was named, but later renamed Veternik . Veternik means "windy" in German.
history
The first mention of a settlement in the area called Neu Ilof was in 1848. It was a settlement for workers who worked in a property that was last owned by Count Kotek . The modern settlement was established in 1918 for Serbian WWI veterans . During the Second World War , the Hungarian government banished the residents of Veternik and settled Hungarians from Bukovina there. After the war, the original residents moved back and the settlement grew rapidly in the decades to come. While 789 people lived in Veternik in 1948, today it is more than twenty times as many.
population
In the 1990s in particular, the population grew rapidly, which is due to the refugees from the civil wars in Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina . In the last few years the population has decreased again slightly.
