Vezio is a fraction of the Italian municipality ( comune ) Perledo and is located on the west bank of Lake Como , in the Lombardy region and belongs to the province of Lecco .
geography
The village is on a hill above Varenna . The castle of Vezio is on the top of this hill. The name is traced back to the Latin Pagus Vetus (old, ancient village) or to the fifth Roman legion of Vescinus, who built the fort .
history
The originally Ligurian - Celtic , possibly Etruscan settlement was founded in the 6th – 7th centuries. Settled by transalpine peoples in the 19th century . With the expansion of the Romans , a fort was built to monitor the shore and sea route. Below the fort on the lakeshore, the Romans built Varenna as a port for maritime trade and military supplies.
Vezio is first mentioned in documents in 1368 in connection with a piece of land that was donated to the Church of Saint Antonio Abate for the construction of the cemetery.
Attractions
The castle was built in the 11th century and expanded several times. It was opened to the public in 1999 and houses a falconry with a hatching, winding and training station.
The church of Sant'Antonio Abate was built as a prayer church for the garrison and the few inhabitants. In 1368 the cemetery was built and in 1570 the church was enlarged. Byzantine frescoes were exposed during the renovation in 1952 .
The Sentiero del Viandante hiking trail was set up on the old mule track, the land connection between the villages on the lake .
