The VfL Wuppertal 12 (officially: Verein für Leibesübungen Wuppertal 12 eV ) was a sports club from Wuppertal . The first soccer team played for three years in the highest amateur league in the Lower Rhine region.

history

The roots of the association go back to 1912 when SC Elberfeld was founded. This club was active in workers' sports and was banned by the National Socialists in 1933. The second regular club was the DJK Liga Elberfeld , which was involved in the Catholic sports movement German youth force . After the DJK clubs were banned in 1934, the DJK League became DSC Elberfeld . Two years later, DSC merged with MTV Elberfeld, which was founded in 1861, to form VfL Wuppertal . After the end of the Second World War , former members of SC Elberfeld joined VfL, which then called itself VfL Wuppertal 12 .

In terms of sport, the previous clubs of VfL 12 were irrelevant. After the war ended, the team played briefly in the district class between 1947 and 1949. The sporting breakthrough came in the 1960s. In 1960 he was promoted to the district class again. Two years later, VfL caused a sensation in the first round of the West German Cup when the team defeated the three leagues higher than Wuppertaler SV 2-1. In round two the end came after a 7-0 defeat at Bayer 04 Leverkusen . After the runner-up in 1962 and 1963 behind the Langenberger SV and the Wuppertaler SC , in 1965 they were promoted to the Lower Rhine regional league . Two years later, the Wuppertal even rose to the association league and reached the highest amateur league on the Lower Rhine. After a fifth place in 1969, VfL had to relegate a year later. In 1972 the team was knocked off bottom of the table and had to go back to the district class. VfL never came out there and merged with Germania Wuppertal to form SV Borussia Wuppertal in 1976 .
