VfL Pirna-Copitz was founded in 1907. Until 1945, the club had no notable successes. After the Second World War, VfL was dissolved. Football players from Pirna first met in the Pirna sports community, which took 8th place in the Dresden I football district relay in 1946/47. With the introduction of the system of company sports associations from 1948, the SG was transferred to the Pirna BSG unit under the support of the municipal administration. In football, the BSG acted in the shadow of the local rivals BSG Chemie and BSG Lok in the lower-class area of the Dresden District Committee .

From 1966 onwards, the economically strong SDAG Wismut took over the BSG unit as a sponsoring company, and this improved the economic framework conditions of the BSG, which in future assumed the name Wismut Pirna-Copitz. The result was the promotion of the first soccer team to the third-rate Dresden district league in 1969 and promotion to the GDR league in 1971 . While the Copitzer were able to keep the class with a seventh place in their first second division season , they had to relegate together with the second team from Wismut Aue after the following season in 1973 . Then Wismut Pirna-Copitz played until the end of the GDR football operation in the Dresden district league and took fourth place in the last season 1989/90, which was enough to qualify for the newly established Landesliga Sachsen . In the course of the economic changes caused by German reunification , the BSG Wismut was converted back into the civil association VfL Pirna-Copitz 07 in 1990. After two relegations to the district league in 1992 and 1995, the first football team of VfL belonged continuously to the state league since 1997 with mostly single-digit positions until they were relegated to the district league in 2011. In 2015, after three consecutive second places, he was promoted to the Landesliga Sachsen again.
