Viadotto Italia

The Viadotto Italia is a motorway bridge on the Autostrada del Sole , more precisely the Autostrada A2 , near the towns of Laino Borgo and Laino Castello in the north of the province of Cosenza in the Italian region of Calabria .

It crosses the deeply cut Lao River at a height of 260 m, making it the highest bridge in Europe until it was replaced by the Viaduc de Millau in 2004. Since then it has been the tallest bridge in Italy and the second tallest in Europe.

description

The bridge was built between 1968 and 1974 on behalf of ANAS according to the plans of Fabrizio de Miranda , Carlo Cestelli Guidi and Carmelo Pellegrino Gallo . It has two directional lanes with two lanes each, which are delimited by guardrails , and a 1.75 m wide, non-public sidewalk on both sides. There is no hard shoulder.

The 1120 m-long bridge consists of 19 orifices 18 of reinforced concrete - pillars which are meters up to 145th Its three central openings have spans of 125 + 175 + 125 m. They are bridged by a 12 m wide steel box girder designed as a continuous beam with a 21.6 m wide orthotropic plate . The box girder has a construction height of 8.5 m, which decreases steadily over the side openings towards its ends. The subsequent 7  bridge fields in the north and 9 fields in the south have separate prestressed concrete slabs and box girders with spans of 43.6 m to 48.4 m for each lane.

The route runs in an arch on the northern bridge fields, which continues into the first of the three central openings, so that the steel superstructure in this area is also curved in plan.

As part of the general overhaul of the Autostrada A2, this arch will be flattened and the roadway will be led north into two new tunnels. To do this, the corresponding part of the bridge must be renewed. In addition, the previous concrete superstructure of the southern bridge fields will also be completely renewed.

Blocking from March to July 2015

During the work to demolish the bridge fields on March 2, 2015, a field in the south-facing carriageway and the worker on it with construction equipment fell around 60 m and tore two holes in pillar 13 upon impact Immediately dead. Since the pillar also supports the other lane, the motorway was immediately closed completely. The pillar was repaired, then three more pavement slabs in the same directional lane (after previous protection of the pillar) were blown up. After the damaged pillar and the other lane had been examined and found to be suitable, traffic in both directions was reopened on one lane each on July 24, 2015.
